My gesture project, A Deal is a Deal, is about the use of gesture as a means of symbolism, motion as a means of expression and its effects on the attitudes of others. A deal can be a commitment or agreement between two or more parties for their mutual benefits. This video focuses on various hand movements, whether it is a handshake, a hi-5 or simply holding hands to imply an idea such as a deal, a commitment, rewards or punishments. It portrays how a simple agreement can lead to violence, as certain gestures are very symbolic of gang violence today. I then geared the same negative uses of motion and gesture into a more positive idea such as for reunion, acknowledgement and rewards. Here, I was aiming for comedic relief and to further suggest that gestures are not just limited to humans but are used by animals as well.
