I chose to start with an image of a tribal elephant because it incorporated certain attributes out of my past research for this course; starting with the African bush elephant to the African Dogon tribe, and drifting towards African art history, and the evolution of contemporary African art. I learned that African art explored abstraction and the rearrangement of shapes and patterns, and that contemporary African art was influenced by some of the same properties as traditional African aesthetics. Hence, why I chose the tribal styling of the elephant. This stood as the underlying basis for my work because I took the initial image of the tribal elephant and distorted the size and shapes of the image while repositioning the image throughout the layers to create a tribal background. I also experimented with colour to enhance the visual impact of the looping of a black and white image to colour.
